How this is calculated

Pakistan taxes salary in slabs. The salary for the whole tax year (1 July to 30 June) is placed in a slab, and only the part above the start of that slab is taxed at the slab's rate:

Tax = fixed amount of the slab + rate × (yearly salary − start of the slab)

In 2025-26 a surcharge of 9% of the tax is added when taxable salary is above Rs 10 million a year.

A monthly salary is multiplied by 12 for the year. The monthly tax is the yearly tax divided by 12, which is how employers usually deduct it. Amounts are rounded to the nearest rupee.

Not included: exempt allowances, tax credits (for example for donations or approved pension funds), the rebate for full-time teachers and researchers, other income and pension. Enter your taxable salary, and treat the result as an estimate, not tax advice.

Worked example

A salary of PKR 150,000 a month is PKR 1,800,000 a year. In 2026-27 the first Rs 600,000 is tax-free, the next Rs 600,000 is taxed at 1% (PKR 6,000) and the remaining Rs 600,000 at 11% (PKR 66,000). The tax is PKR 72,000 a year, or PKR 6,000 a month, which leaves PKR 144,000 a month. The effective rate is 4%.

Pakistan salary tax questions

How is tax on salary calculated in Pakistan for 2026-27?

Your yearly taxable salary is placed in the FBR slabs. Up to Rs 600,000 a year there is no tax. Above that, each slab has a fixed amount plus a rate on the income above the start of the slab. For example, Rs 1,800,000 a year pays 6,000 + 11% of 600,000 = Rs 72,000.

How much tax is deducted from a salary of Rs 100,000 a month?

Rs 100,000 a month is Rs 1,200,000 a year. In 2026-27 that is 1% of the Rs 600,000 above the tax-free limit: Rs 6,000 a year, or Rs 500 a month.

What changed between 2025-26 and 2026-27?

The slabs up to Rs 2.2 million a year are the same. Above that the rates are lower: 20% instead of 23%, 25% instead of 30%, then new 29% and 32% slabs, and the top rate of 35% now starts above Rs 7 million instead of Rs 4.1 million. The 9% surcharge on salaried income above Rs 10 million does not apply in 2026-27.

Is this my exact tax?

It is an estimate from the FBR slabs for taxable salary. Exempt allowances, tax credits, the teachers' rebate and other income are not included, and your employer's monthly deduction can differ if your salary changed during the year. Check your payslip or ask a tax adviser for exact figures.

What is the difference between the effective and the marginal tax rate?

The effective rate is your total tax divided by your salary. The marginal rate is the rate on the next rupee you earn, which is the rate of your highest slab. At Rs 1,800,000 a year the effective rate is 4% and the marginal rate is 11%.

Results are estimates for planning. They are not financial, tax or religious advice.
