This is an estimate. Live prices are the international market price converted to your currency, and shops charge their own rates. Check the price, weight, making charges and tax on your invoice before you pay.
How this is calculated
The total is built from five parts, each worked out from what you enter:
- Pure gold in the item
- Weight in grams × karat ÷ 24
- Gold value
- Pure gold grams × price per gram × (1 + premium ÷ 100)
- Making charges
- A percentage of the gold value, or an amount per gram of the item, or a fixed amount
- Tax
- Gold value × gold tax rate + making charges × making tax rate
- Total to pay
- Gold value + making charges + tax
The weight is converted to grams first: a gram is 1 g, a tola is 11.6638038 g and a troy ounce is 31.1034768 g.
The price boxes fill with the live international (spot) price of gold, converted to your currency with the latest exchange rate, and refresh every minute while the page is open. This is not a shop price: jewellers and bullion dealers in your country charge their own rate, usually above spot. Use the premium box, or type your local price, to match what you are quoted.
The tax rates are presets for the country you choose, as we last checked them on the date shown, and you can change them. Tax rules differ for jewellery and for investment gold bars and coins, and they change, so check your receipt. This calculator gives an estimate, not tax advice.
Worked example
A 10 g item of 22K gold, with 24K gold at $100.00 a gram, 10% making charges and 5% tax on both: the gold value is $916.67, the making charges are $91.67, the tax is $50.41 and the total is $1,058.75. The price is an example, not today's price.
Gold questions
Why is the live price different from my jeweller's price?
The live price is the international market (spot) price of pure gold, converted to your currency. A jeweller or bullion dealer adds a margin, local demand and sometimes import duty, so the price per gram is usually higher. Enter the difference in the premium box, or type the price you were quoted.
What is a tola, and how many grams is it?
A tola is a traditional South Asian unit of weight. This calculator uses the standard value of about 11.6638 grams per tola. A troy ounce, the unit used for the international gold price, is 31.1035 grams.
What do 22K and 18K mean?
Karat shows how much of the item is pure gold, out of 24 parts. 24K is pure gold, 22K is about 91.7% gold and 18K is 75%. The calculator values only the pure gold part at the gold price, and adds the making charges separately.
What are making charges?
Making charges are what the jeweller charges for crafting the piece, on top of the gold itself. They are quoted as a percentage of the gold value, an amount per gram or a fixed amount. Choose the way your jeweller quotes them.
Do VAT or GST apply, and is my information stored?
Many countries add VAT or GST to jewellery, sometimes at different rates for the gold and for the making charges, so the tax boxes start with a preset for the country you pick and can be changed. Investment bars and coins may be taxed differently. The calculation runs in your browser and your numbers are not sent to us or saved. Only the public gold price and exchange rates are requested.
