How this is calculated
Commission is a percentage of the sales amount. These are the formulas used:
- Commission
- S × r ÷ 100
- Total pay with base pay
- B + S × r ÷ 100
- Sales needed for a target commission
- C ÷ (r ÷ 100)
- Commission rate from commission and sales
- C ÷ S × 100
S is the sales amount, r is the commission rate in percent, B is the base pay and C is the commission.
This calculator uses one flat rate for all sales. Plans with tiers, caps or different rates by product are paid differently, so check your own agreement.
Amounts are rounded to 2 decimal places. The sales needed are rounded up to the next cent, so the target is always reached.
Worked example
Sales of $10,000.00 at a rate of 5% earn a commission of $500.00. With a base pay of $2,000.00, the total pay is $2,500.00. To earn a commission of $750.00 at the same rate, sales of $15,000.00 are needed.
Commission questions
How do I calculate commission?
Multiply the sales amount by the commission rate ÷ 100. A sale of 10,000 at 5% pays 10,000 × 0.05 = 500.
How do I find the commission rate?
Divide the commission by the sales amount and multiply by 100. A commission of 500 on sales of 10,000 is 500 ÷ 10,000 = 5%.
Is commission paid before or after tax?
Commission is normally quoted before tax, and tax is taken from your total pay. Your contract or employer can tell you how it is handled where you live.
What is tiered commission?
In a tiered plan the rate rises as sales pass set levels, for example 3% up to 10,000 and 5% above that. This calculator uses one flat rate, so work out each tier separately and add them up.
