How this is calculated
Totals are simple sums. These are the formulas used:
- Total spent
- T = E₁ + E₂ + … + Eₙ
- Share of a category
- C ÷ T × 100
- Average per expense
- T ÷ n
- Budget left
- B − T
T is the total, E₁ to Eₙ are your expenses, C is the total of one category, n is the number of expenses and B is your budget. A negative result for B − T means you are over budget.
Nothing you enter is stored or sent: it lives only on this page and is gone when you reload. Use Download CSV to keep a copy you can open in a spreadsheet.
Every amount is rounded to 2 decimal places before it is added, so the category totals add up to the total to the cent. Shares are shown rounded, so together they can show 99.99% or 100.01%.
Worked example
The 4 expenses add up to $315.50. The biggest category is Food at $120.00, which is 38.03% of the total, and the average is $78.88 per expense. Against a budget of $400.00, $84.50 is left.
Expense tracker questions
Is my data saved?
No. Nothing is stored in your browser or sent to us, so reloading or closing the page clears the list. Use Download CSV to keep a copy.
Why does it not save automatically?
Saving would need storage on your device. This free version keeps nothing, so your spending stays private. Download the CSV to keep your data.
How do I use the budget?
Enter the amount you plan to spend in the period you are tracking, for example a month. The tracker shows how much is left, or by how much you are over.
Can I open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. The file uses commas, a dot for decimals and UTF-8 text, so it opens in Excel, Google Sheets and Numbers. Notes that start with =, +, - or @ get a leading apostrophe so a spreadsheet does not run them as formulas.
Is my information stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. The numbers you enter are not sent to us or saved. The CSV file is created on your device.
