How this is calculated
A discount takes a percentage off the original price. These are the formulas used:
- Final price
- P × (1 − d ÷ 100)
- Final price with two discounts
- P × (1 − d₁ ÷ 100) × (1 − d₂ ÷ 100)
- Discount percentage from two prices
- (P − S) ÷ P × 100
- Original price from a sale price
- S ÷ (1 − d ÷ 100)
P is the original price, S is the sale price and d is the discount in percent.
Two discounts do not add up. 20% off followed by 10% off is 28% off, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the price after the first.
Prices are rounded to 2 decimal places, so the original price minus the final price always equals the saving shown. Shops can round in different steps, so a till total may differ by a cent.
Worked example
A price of $80.00 with 25% off becomes $60.00, a saving of $20.00. If a second discount of 10% is applied on top, the price becomes $54.00, which is 32.5% off in total, not 35%.
Discount questions
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the price by the discount ÷ 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the price. For example, 25% off 80 saves 20, so the final price is 60.
How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?
Divide the difference by the original price and multiply by 100: (original − sale) ÷ original × 100. From 80 down to 60 is 20 ÷ 80 = 25%.
Do two discounts add up?
No. The second discount applies to the price after the first. 20% off and then a further 10% off takes 100 to 80 and then to 72, which is 28% off in total, not 30%.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If a coat costs 60 after 25% off, the original price was 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80.
